Build the fire the way you were taught, and let the grate hold it there.
A tee pee lay is the first fire most people learn. Kindling leaned into a cone, flame up the middle, wood falling inward as it burns. The trouble is that a tee pee built on flat ground tends to collapse sideways a few minutes in, usually right when it has properly caught.
This is a welded steel cone you lean the wood against. It holds the shape while the fire takes, and as the logs burn through they drop into the center instead of rolling out. What you end up with is a core of hot embers in the middle of the pit rather than a scattered pile around the edge.
Fits any fire pit. It stands on its own and sits inside the pit rather than mounting to anything, so there is nothing to measure. Use it in a masonry pit, a steel bowl, a fire ring, or straight on the ground at a campsite.
