A round fire pit grate built from 5/8 inch solid steel bar stock, welded rather than cast. It lifts the fire off the floor of the pit so air feeds the wood from underneath, which is the difference between a fire that smolders and one that burns down to clean ash.
Standard tine height is 4 inches for optimal burn, on 4 inch legs. These are heavy by design: a 24 inch grate weighs 43 pounds and a 48 inch weighs 110. They are a direct update for old cast iron grates that crack and warp.
Choosing your size
Measure the inside diameter of your fire pit and order a grate at least 3 inches smaller. The grate needs clearance all the way around — it should sit inside the pit, not wedge against the walls. If you are between sizes, go down.
The Char-Guard ember catch
Char-Guard is heavy duty expanded metal welded to the underside of the grate. It holds coals in the fire instead of letting them drop through, so the burn stays consistent, ash cleanup is simpler, and you can cook with charcoal if you want to.
