Backyard fire pits bring warmth, ambiance, and even culinary adventures to outdoor living spaces. However, with so many options and accessories available, it’s natural to have questions about their proper use.

Here are answers to 20 questions we most frequently hear from our customers, from starting the perfect fire to maintaining your pit and making the most of your outdoor experience. 1. How do I choose the right size fire pit for my backyard?

Consider best location, space restrictions, seating, and purpose. For smaller backyards or patios, a small chiminea or propane setup may be ideal. For most backyards, Walden Legacy Series Fire Pit is designed to be just the right size, perfect for intimate gatherings or large backyard events.

2. How to use a fire pit

Before starting a fire in your fire pit, be sure that the fire pit is assembled/constructed according to proper instructions of the designer and the fire pit is located far enough away from anything that could otherwise unintentionally ignite. If the fire does not have a snuffer lid, be sure to keep water or a fire extinguisher handy – just in case. Keep the fire well contained and controlled and never leave an open flame unattended. Above all, enjoy the fire pit safely.

3. How do I safely start a fire in my fire pit?

Make sure the chosen location is not near any flammable structure, of course, and be sure the fire will be well-contained and managed. Walden Sure-Fire Starters make fire-starting a breeze, even with damp wood. Pair them with the Stoker Poker for maximum airflow and an impressive flame.

4. How to build a fire in a fire pit

Start with well-seasoned firewood on top of a high quality fire grate to deliver good airflow. Stack the wood properly, use a good fire starter and then add logs for an efficient, roaring fire with minimal smoke.

5. Can I cook directly over a fire pit?

Absolutely! Just place a high quality cooking grate on top of your fire pit ring, and you're all set. With Walden’s BBQ Grilling Grate, you can cook smoky meats, veggies, or even pizzas, transforming your fire pit into an outdoor kitchen.

6. Can I use my fire pit during a burn ban?

No, we really don’t recommend using any fire pit during a burn ban. Always follow local fire safety regulations. Even small fire pits or can-style “smokeless” incinerators still can produce high heat, flames and cinders.

7. How can I enhance the ambiance around my fire pit?

Add comfy chairs, string lights, and naturally fire-retardant Walden Fireside Wool Blankets to make your fireside experience extra cozy. Some folks add to the setting with wind chimes or water features, etc. to create a cozy backyard oasis perfect for relaxing with family and friends.

8. How can I protect my fire pit from the elements?

Depending upon the type of fire pit you’ve got, use a durable cover (for a stationary/permanent fire it) or move a portable pit to a sheltered spot. Remember not to ignite any fire pit too close to any combustible structure.

9. How can I maintain and clean my fire pit effectively?

Maintain a good finish on your fire pit by touching-up with hi-temp paint, or by seasoning any raw steel with vegetable oil to protect it from rusting and the elements. Walden Ash Scoop makes cleaning quick and hassle-free, ensuring better airflow and keeping your fire pit in top-notch condition.

10. How do I prevent rust on my steel fire pit?

Apply a heat-resistant coating as needed and store covered when not in use. Walden fire pits are built tough to withstand frequent use and outdoor conditions.

11. How do I safely extinguish a fire in my fire pit?

If you have a snuffer lid, simply place the lid over the fire to smother the flames and embers. Otherwise, you can sprinkle water or sand over the flames and spread embers. For safety, consider wearing protective gloves like Walden Bonfire Boss gloves if touching hot materials.

12. How does a smokeless fire pit work?

“Smokeless” fire pits employ secondary combustion, much like an incinerator to re-burn the smoke that wood may produce, especially if the wood is not well-seasoned. The fire is largely contained down inside the can so that the smoke can be captured and re-burned. This design can work well to reduce smoke, if properly used and once the can is up to heat, but fire visibility is compromised.

13. What are the benefits of a smokeless fire pit?

“Smokeless pits” minimize smoke for cleaner air. With Walden’s Original Fire Grate, you can retrofit a classic fire pit to deliver better air flow and reduced smoke. The three most important factors in making fires smoke less are: well-seasoned firewood, proper air flow, and good combustion (getting the fire up to a good burn heat).

14. What is the purpose of a fire pit grate?

Quality fire grates, such as Walden Wagon Wheel Fire Grate, elevate firewood for better airflow, hotter fires, and easier ash removal, making fires more efficient and minimizing smoke.

15. How hot does a fire pit get?

Temperatures can vary widely and can reach 1,200°F, so containment and control of the fire is critical. Thickness of steel and, ideally, a surround made of stone or concrete blocks can greatly enhance fire safety.

16. What accessories enhance the cooking experience over a fire pit?

As fire pit cooking has gained popularity over recent years, so has the assortment of accessories available. Once you’ve got the right setup (a good quality fire pit) we think the most important accessories are: a good fire poker (for managing the fire), a good BBQ grill/grate, a long-handled grilling fork and spatula, and fire gloves for safety and comfort around the grill.

17. Is it necessary to have a spark screen for my fire pit?

In some areas and conditions, a good spark screen may be a must-have. Some local codes may even require them. In most cases, good fire management practices and common sense go a long way to safely contain and control the fire, but if you are at all unsure of containment, you may wish to use a spark screen for peace of mind.

18. What is the lifespan of a typical steel fire pit?

Fire pit lifespans vary widely, from less than a year to many decades. Longevity depends on such factors as: the original design and quality of the materials, frequency and type of use, maintenance practices, weather protection, etc. Walden fire pits are crafted from premium steel and designed for a lifetime of use.

19. What to put under a fire pit on grass

If you’re placing a fire pit directly on the grass, most portable fire pits will kill the grass in the first or second hot fire. Fire-resistant mats or pavers can protect your lawn only temporarily, but usually heat from the fire or smothering of the grass will kill the turf. If you’re planning on placing a fire pit on the lawn more permanently, it’s a good idea to remove the turf directly under the pit and replace it with gravel, pavers, stones or the like.

20. What type of firewood is best for fire pits?

Choose hardwoods like oak or hickory for long, clean burns. Use Walden Sure-Fire Starters for easy lighting every time.

Backyard fire pits are versatile, fun, and functional. With the right tools and accessories, like those from Walden Backyards, you can create the perfect outdoor experience for years to come.
