Thanksgiving Fire Pit Recipe

Thanksgiving Fire Pit Recipe

Even though Thanksgiving meals are traditionally prepared using indoor kitchens, you don't have to limit yourself like this if you have a fire pit you want to cook on. You don't have to limit yourself to traditional foods either like our recipes below. Consider cooking a cajun-seasoned ribeye recipe for the fire pit as an option as well.

Traditional Thanksgiving Fire Pit Recipe

Here are a few typical Thanksgiving staples that can be adapted to cook over a fire pit perfectly.

Fire Pits - Thanksgiving Recipes - Turkey

Smoked Applewood Turkey Breast

In just two hours, you can enjoy a delicious Applewood smoked turkey breast. However, this recipe requires some prep work to be done the night before. That's when you'll need to soak four cups worth of Applewood chips. You'll want to do this at the bottom of the steamer you're using. At the same time, you'll be cooking the turkey breast in your steamer's main chamber.

The turkey breast should be cooked in a foil pan with the edges turned up. This way, you won't have to worry about losing all of the juice from the meat. It's also important to note that during the cooking process you'll want to keep the pot covered, so you don't lose the effect of the steam on your turkey.

When preparing your fire pit to smoke your turkey, make sure you place a strong grate over it. Your coals should be six inches under the grate, so the heat reaches your smoker. Once you put the Applewood chips in, give them 15 minutes to heat up properly. If, after that 15 minutes, you don't have smoke, you'll need to put more wood chips in to further stoke the fire, preferably with the Walden Blow Through Fire Stoker Poker.

In the meantime, use an oven thermometer to make sure your smoker is between 375 and 425 degrees, so your turkey gets cooked sufficiently.

Sweet Potatoes

Cooking over a fire pit doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your sweet potatoes. With a little creativity, they may turn out even better than any sweet potatoes you've ever made in your kitchen at home. To make them over a fire pit, you'll need one sweet potato for each person you're feeding, butter, and aluminum foil. You can even spice up your potatoes with nutmeg, cinnamon, maple syrup, sage leaves or thyme.

After slicing the potatoes, cover them with your choice of spice. Before cooking the slices of potatoes, each one needs to be wrapped in foil. Turning each slice of potato frequently, they will take between 30 and 40 minutes to cook. When they are done cooking, you can mix the sweet potatoes up and add in the syrup and butter. You'll get a flavor from the potatoes that you'd never get cooking on an indoor stove.

Upside Down Apple Pie

What's Thanksgiving without pie after eating a big meal? Even Thanksgiving dessert can be made over a fire pit. To add a touch of creativity to your holiday meal, it's easy to bake an Upside Down Apple Pie. All you need is a cast-iron 12-inch pan and your ingredients. In the pan, you'll need to combine the juice of a lemon, apple cider (1/4 cup,) brown sugar (3/4cup,) a teaspoon of cinnamon and a pinch of salt. With your pot resting on the grate, let it cook for between five and 10 minutes. When the glaze is bubbling, it is ready. As soon as it starts to bubble, you'll need to add butter one tablespoon at a time until you've used six.

You'll then need to add six slices of apple to the glaze, with the round side of each slice facing the bottom of the pan. Let the apples and glaze cook for 20 minutes. The next step is to use a puff pastry sheet, cut to cover the width of the pan, to cover the apple slices.

Once you've tucked the sides of the pastry sheet down,  you'll need a second 12 inch pan to cover the top. Your heated coals should only be six inches below the bottom of the pan. Additional hot coal needs to be added to the top of the pan. Let the pie bake for 20 minutes, take it off the heat to cool, and then flip the pan and bake for an additional 20 minutes. This is how you turn it into an upside down apple pie.
